The longest-serving US fighter unit in World War 2, the 4th Fighter Group scored more victories (550 air and 461 ground) than any other Eighth Air Force unit, and it was the first to engage the Luftwaffe over both Paris and Berlin. Formed around a nucleus of pilots already seasoned by their experience as volunteers in the RAF's 'Eagle Squadrons', the 4th FG was established at Debden, in Essex, in late September 1942. Initially flying Spitfires until April 1943, the group then transitioned to P-47 Thunderbolts, before receiving P-51 Mustangs in February 1944. The 4th FG's combat record was unmatched in the ETO, and it boasted more than 70 aces by the war's end. Book jacket.
