The 826 Quarterly, Volume 19

This edition of the 826 Quarterly contains fiction, non-fiction, and poetry written by authors ages 6-18. The pieces are selected from all the 826 programs (drop-in tutoring, workshops, in-schools, projects, field trips) and at-large submissions. Pieces are chosen in a traditional literary journal style by an editorial board comprised of students and volunteer tutors. This issue includes a hard-hitting investigation into what one 11 year old writer calls "the hipster epidemic," poetry about real ships that are sunken under the streets of San Francisco, introspective personal essays on group identity, and short fiction about zoo animals who learn to embrace democracy. It's a wild ride with something to make readers of all ages smile and think.

Matthew Zapruder is the author of four collections of poetry, including Sun Bear, forthcoming from Copper Canyon Press in Spring 2014. His most recent book, Come On All You Ghosts (Copper Canyon, 2010), was selected as one of the year’s top five poetry books by Publishers Weekly. Molly Parent has been coordinating educational programs to support youth with their creative and expository writing skills at 826 Valencia since 2012. Prior to joining the team at 826, she was a bookseller at Green Apple Books in San Francisco.
