Advances in Social Work Practice with the Military

This edited book is designed to better prepare civilian social workers with the practice and clinical skills necessary in working with members of the military returning from combat and their families. It will educate social workers on the issues faced by these men and women, enabling them to have a firm understanding from which to frame intervention strategies. Topics that will be covered are the world of the military, including its culture, the impact of the military experience, and an overview of the services offered by the VA; special populations and the issues they can face, such as those returning with physical and mental injuries/trauma, women and sexual harassment, and those who develop substance use disorders; the physiology of war zone exposure, shame, and PTSD; and the effects of military deployment and return on children and families.
