Historical account of when almost a hundred United States citizens were sent to Van Dieman's Land by the British Government in 1839-40. The men were members of the Patriot Army that had conducted border raids into the colony of Upper Canada in order to 'liberate' the Canadians from British oppression. The British Government sought to make an example of the men by illegally exiling them to Van Deiman's land, where they suffered harsh treatment before they were eventually pardoned. Includes photos, appendices, notes, bibliography and index. Pybus is ARC Senior Fellow in History and Classics at the University of Tasmania. She has previously written 'Gross Moral Turpitude' and 'The Devil and James McAuley', which won the 2000 Adelaide Festival Award for non-fiction. Maxwell-Stewart is a lecturer in the School of History and Classics at the University of Tasmania. He co-edited 'Chain Letters: Narrating Convict Lives' with Lucy Frost.
