This study examines one aspect of American women's professionalization and the implications of the cross-cultural dialogue between American woman missionaries and Japanese students and supporters at Kobe College between 1873 and 1909. The study relies on analysis of hte missionaries' correspondence in American Board of Commissioners for Foreign Missions (ABCFM) Papers and the life patterns of the Japanese alumnae found in archival records at Kobe College.
