The Ashgate Research Companion to Planning Theory: Conceptual Challenges for Spatial Planning

This companion brings together a team of respected and experienced experts to write authoritative chapters of key issues in planning theory. The overall rationale is that spatial planning should recognise the relational complexity of the worlds in which people plan and so it asks: what does it mean to plan and govern in complexity? The contributors, brought together from both within and beyond what is narrowly defined as 'planning', all have a particular interest in issues of spatiality and have strong theoretical foundation for their work. With a global geographical spread and range of ages and experience, the companion aims to provide a stimulating and comprehensive overview. It is divided into four main sections: understandings of place; understandings of governance; imagining futures; and spatial planning and governance in complexity.
