The Beautiful Necessity Essays on Architecture

A noted American architect of the early twentieth century discusses universal principles behind the harmonious forms and proportions of ancient and modern buildings. Architect Claude Bragdon (1866–1946) worked in the progressive tradition associated with Louis Sullivan and Frank Lloyd Wright. He designed many private residences and public buildings, including Rochester's New York Central Railroad Terminal and Chamber of Commerce.
