Social Anarchism: A Journal of Theory and Practice is a peer-reviewed journal of anarchist writing edited in Baltimore, Maryland. It began publishing in 1980. Over the years, it grew to become the premier English-language anarchist periodical, with strong readership in the US, Canada, Great Britain and Australia. Unique in its editorial selection, the journal focused equally on both theoretical works and descriptions of contemporary practice. Unlike most political periodicals, contributions to Social Anarchism are reviewed by an international board of editors, avoiding the sectarian diatribes that characterize so much of political writing. Some of the notable contributors to Social Anarchism over the years include Noam Chomsky, Colin Ward, Kingsley Widmer, Murray Bookchin, and Richard Kostelanetz. The journal has covered topics as varied as consensus decision-making, communal living, terrorism, and alternative economics. The editors place special emphasis on the social role of education, from early childhood to university culture. The anthology has been divided into five major sections, covering theory, practice, education, historical figures, and contemporary voices. Each article in the manuscript has been provided with a summary abstract written by the editors. Overall, The Best of Social Anarchism presents a unique and rewarding perspective on the fresh and vital contributions of anarchism to our current situation, building the new society in the vacant lots of the old.
