Why Defend Reading Choices?

Published 19, July 2012 05:00  | by Ashley

Lately I’ve been hearing so many people diss other people’s reading choices because it’s not the type of book they think should be read. In other words, they are book snobs. What I’m here to tell you is that you can read anything you want! That’s right…anything!

As human beings we are allowed, and most of the time expected, to have different tastes. I for one read a wide variety of books and I have no shame in admitting any of them. Honestly, I couldn’t have said the same thing three years ago, but now I completely embrace my tastes and fully understand that the books I read are perfect for me, and no one can tell me they are the wrong things to read.

Now, I am not entirely sure why book snobs are the way they are. Do they want to seem smarter because they only read “the classics” and “good literature,” or are they just very deprived people because they don’t allow themselves to read anything else, and therefore they take out their sadness on us? Whatever the reason, I feel a deep amount of heartache for their robbed souls (Because really, if they aren’t getting variety and opening themselves up to new things, they are robbed of experiencing greatness).

The bottom line is that we can’t be expected to have the same tastes in everything! We should read whatever stories make us happy and help us escape from the world for a little bit, not what book snobs deem appropriate.
