The thirtieth edition of DorlandÆs Illustrated Medical Dictionary honors the 100th year since it was first published and the editors continue to maintain the high standard of previous editions. The dictionary was first issued in 1898 as the American Pocket Medical Dictionary edited by W.A. Newman Dorland, AM, MD. It contained approximately 500 terms. The twenty-ninth edition was published in 2000.This 30th edition presents nearly all the 1,100 illustrations in color, which helps to further clarify the meaning of the terms. Each term is presented in dark red ink thus making the words being defined stand out from the definitions. More than 122,000 terms are included. Over 600 terms from the area of complementary and alternative medicine have been added. Five new appendices have been added to the thirteen that appeared in the 29th edition, examples are cancer staging, symbols, and a list of surgical equipment.A downloadable CD ROM spell-checker is inserted in an envelope in the front of the volume. On a promotional insert, in the front of the volume, are instructions for on line access including a designated password for individual purchasers.Recommended for health and medical libraries, academic libraries, large public libraries, and interested individuals.Reviewer: Eileen Heaser, Reference Librarian, California State University at Sacramento Library, eheaser@csus.edu Copyright 2004 E-Streams Reviews.
