K-Gr 2 Beginning with Mr. Underbed, Jim discovers a host of cheerful, baggy-looking monsters residing in his bedroom, all of whom want to sleep in his bed. Jim decides to sleep under the bed. There is not much here. Although children may find the pictures amusing, Mayer's There's a Nightmare in My Closet (Dial, 1968) and Sendak's Where the Wild Things Are (Harper, 1963) are preferable. This first writing effort by Riddell seems lacking in plot and thematic content, and the brightly-colored watercolors include some garish shades and unappealing combinations of colors. Ronald A.
