This is a companion volume to Gale's A Young Man's Guide to Sex , similar in style and format, but with the added perspective of a female author. In an even but sympathetic tone, psychologist and educator Voss and psychologist Gale examine the physiological, emotional, and psychological changes that occur in adolescence and beyond. They admit reluctantly that large numbers of girls in their early teens are sexually active and meet it head on with options for responsible birth control and venereal disease prevention. An especially valuable section discusses physical and legal protection from rape and sexual harassment. One puzzling oversight: The public library is not listed among the community information and referral agencies. Suzanne Druehl, Little Rock P.L., Ark . Copyright 1986 Cahners Business Information.
YA This companion volume to Gale's A Young Man's Guide to Sex (Holt, 1984) provides a frank discussion of all aspects of sexuality which will be informative to women from age 12 to age 90. The authors cover male and female anatomy, contraception, sexually transmitted diseases, unplanned pregnancy, incest, first sexual experience, and homosexuality. This is a realistic, non-judgmental presentation of facts. It does not present sexual values, but does stress the importance of determining one's own values regarding sexual conduct. While the mechanics of sex are well covered, emotions and responsible decision-making are emphasized. An appendix lists helpful organizations and agencies. This is a practical, well-done book by two psychologists and sex therapists. Mothers and daughters will find reassurance and answers to many of their questions. Lois Jerolleman, Houston Pub. Lib.
