When a fierce storm threatens to ruin the festivities at Bywater Hollow's annual spring fair, Basil, a notoriously clumsy bear, saves the day from becoming a disaster Basil is an affable gentleman bear who, alas, can't do anything right. He splits his breeches picking raspberries and then spills his basket of berries before he can make his famous tarts. Most of his friends love him despite his flaws, and they are all counting on him to win the pie-eating contest at the local fair. But in the midst of the contest, a storm breaks out and the fair tent collapses on the participants. Now Basil has his moment of glory as he holds open a side of the tent and helps everyone escape to safety. This British import has beautiful, detailed illustrations reminiscent of Beatrix Potter. But Basil is just a tad precious, and the resolution of his problem is too predictable. Ages 58. (May) Copyright 1987 Cahners Business Information.
K-Gr 4 Basil is a bear whose clumsiness always causes him to make a mess out of everything he tries. He hopes to redeem himself and his pride by winning the pie-eating contest at the Bywater Hollow Fair, but Fate and a rainstorm help Basil to prove his worth to his animal friends in a more important way. Both story and illustrations are weak. The story would not appeal to older children, and the text is much too wordy for young children. There is too little interest and no tension as the plot unfolds, and too many characters are not developed, including the hero. The illustrations are crowded, fussy, and too filled with strong color. The result is the look of a rather ornate greeting card. Kay McPherson, Central Atlanta-Fulton Public Library Copyright 1987 Cahners Business Information.
