K-Gr 2 Camomile, a small weak calf, is taken to the market but forgotten and left all alone. She decides to find her way back home, and on the way she has many adventures, including being sold to another farmer and escaping from a burning barn. Finally, she reaches home. All of these encounters leave her a stronger, more beautiful calf who will eventually grow into a lovely healthy cow. Pfister's illustrations for this quaint story are in soft pastel watercolors, giving Camomile as well as the other animals and people a warm, gentle aura. The European setting is evidenced by the thatched cottages and other details found in the town and countryside. The story itself flows well and should captivate youngsters, especially those who are the youngest in the family and who at times cannot do the same things their older brothers and sisters do.
