Gr 6-10Kashka is, in many ways, a standard fantasy with plenty of room left for a sequel or a trilogy or even a series. There is a beautiful (but sad) princess, a handsome prince, a benevo lent king, and his kind queen. Arrayed against them are a triumvirate of evil, bent on domination and destruction. The book is saved from being just an other fantasy by the title character and his family. Kashka and his cousin Piff are a pair of scamps, alike as twins. Their fathers were twins, as were their mothers, so the similarity is not too sur prising. As highly talented entertainers, they enjoy the king's favor. They also incur the wrath of the Lady Ysene, the woman most filled from crown to toe with the direst cruelty since Lady Mac beth. When Kashka stumbles upon the Lady's plot to take control of the king's infant son, he takes the child to hide him from her. The beginning of the book is slow going, and it takes a bit of work to keep all the threads of the story straight. However, it does pick up and can become quite exciting for someone willing to stick with it. The unappealing jacket art gives no clue as to the adven tures within. Susan M.
