SummaryEditorial Reviews
A collection of articles emphasizing the opinion that more has to be done in the area of recycling to get a firm handle on the current problem with waste management
Though both these works are pro-environment, they take opposite stands on the power of business to make a difference. Ecopreneuring believes that small businesses can help solve environmental problems and make a profit as well. It provides concrete, specific, and realistic advice that will quickly bring the environmental idealist down to earth. Besides offering general information on such topics as fundraising and marketing, the book covers resources needed for a broad cross section of ecobusinesses. Opportunities range from recycling to investment to publishing. Green Business , edited by the aptly named Plants, is more idealistic, demanding a radical restructuring of society so that decisions are made for the welfare of all, and the profit motive becomes obsolete. In calling for less consumption all around and for a cooperative or communal solution to ecological problems, it cites such examples as the Amish, a Japanese housewives' purchasing collective, and SHARE, a Massachusetts small business loan collateralization program. While these examples are workable, the book's editors are probably too optimistic about people's willingness to reorganize for the common good. After all, most people do not want to live like the Amish, which is why we are in this environmental mess in the first place. These two books fill a need for general books for those eyeing ecobusiness options. Recommended for business collections.-- Sue McKimm, Cuyahoga Cty.
