When his plane is hit he is horribly burned, but lived to recount here his agonizing, heroic recuperation. Hillary wrote this memorable book in 1942, and to fly again, one last time, on a complex and hazardous night training mission which his injuries had rendered him barely fit to pilot. He never returned.
