Harriet Martineau (1802-1876) is widely known as the first woman sociologist. For two years she traveled throughout America, using every possible means of transport and interviewing people of all classes, religion, races, and backgrounds. She studied documents, cemeteries, government statistics, literature, culture, and newspapers--all of which were drawn upon to produce these works, remarkable for their scope and encyclopedic content.
