Walther Rathenau (1867-1922) was an industrialist and politician who played a leading role in the reconstruction of Germany after World War I. Rathenau's economic writings and speeches show his ideas to have been at the heart of left-wing economic thinking in post-war Germany. His influence also spread outside Germany, as evidenced by the works of American writers such as William Ripley, Adolph Berle and Gardiner Means.
