In July, 1990, fifteen-year-old David James of Pitt Meadows, B.C., Canada was hiking with his grandfather, Bud Ryckman of West Vancouver, B.C., when Ryckman slipped and fell almost 1,000 feet down a cliff. James scrambled down (free-climbing) to apply first aid, and then went to find help. After he, too, became trapped on the edge of another cliff, he used a failing walkie-talkie to direct aid to himself and his grandfather. |
