The recent work of Italian artist Paladino (b.1948), whose strangely haunted artistic language draws strength from the relics and mystic symbols of both Christian and pagan traditions, is in this book given detailed attention. Paladino's paintings and sculptures have a cold beauty and ancientness about them which is entirely in contrast with so much of contemporary art's self-conscious irony and self-absorption.
