In this book Professor Westergaard offers an alternative to the purely syntactic analysis of deinite nominal phrase anaphora. She calls on the well-known principle of functional sentence perspective, advanced by the Prague school of linguistics, to suggest a pragmatic approach to the coreference options of pronouns and full nominal phrases. According to her analysis, the anaphora rule should itself be considered a pragmatic principle, which bascially ensures that a pronoun may not be more thematic than the full nominal phrase from which it picks up its reference.
