The two Asian powers have fought three bloody wars since the 16th century, two over Korea (then a Chinese protectorate), and the last one (1931-1945) on the Chinese continent. If quests for resources by a resource-hungry Japan motivated these historical feuds, then will the current contest for the massive East China Sea oil and gas reserves trigger a modern resource war between the two hefty oil-consuming nations? The book's contributors examine Sino-Japanese relations from different angles and disciplines, weighing the respective Chinese and Japanese stands on the perpetual friction.

JAMES C. HSIUNG, Ph.D.-Columbia University, is Professor of Politics at New York University, and author and editor of 18 books on Pacific Asian international relations, U.S. Asian relations, Chinese foreign policy, and international law. His current research interest is in sea power and the twenty-first century. At NYU, he teaches comparative politics of China and Japan, international relations of Asia, international law, and international governance.
