The mathematical modeling of physical and chemical systems is used extensively throughout science, engineering, and applied mathematics. In order to make use of mathematical models, it is necessary to have solutions to the model equations. Generally, this requires numerical methods because of the complexity and number of equations.

William E. Schiesser is the Emeritus R. L. McCann Professor of Chemical Engineering and a Professor of Mathematics at Lehigh University. He is also a visiting professor at the University of Pennsylvania and the coauthor of the Cambridge book computational Transport Phenomena. Graham W. Griffiths is a visiting professor in the School of Engineering and Mathematical Sciences of City University, London, and a principal consultant with Honeywell Systems. He is also a founder of Special Analysis and Simulation Technology Ltd. and has worked extensively in the field of dynamic simulation of chemical processes.
