This special issue of Corrosion Engineering, Science and Technology is dedicated to the study of the corrosion of objects from historical sites. Ancient materials research is eminently interdisciplinary, involving archaeological sites, museums, laboratories and even synchrotron facilities. It is only through such concerted efforts that it will be possible to 'fill the gap' between restoration workshops and scientific laboratories. This issue strives to achieve this by providing a broad understanding of the corrosion of ancient materials, for the most part metals but also glass, as well shedding light on the range and application of analytical approaches available. This issue will be of lasting, practical value to everyone involved in the conservation of historical artefacts.
