Developing Fluent Readers Teaching Fluency as a Foundational Skill

Viewing fluency as a bridge between foundational skills and open-ended learning, this book guides teachers through effective instruction and assessment of fluent reading skills in the primary grades. Fluency’s relationship to phonological awareness, phonics, and print concepts is explained, and practical methods are shared for integrating fluency instruction in a literacy curriculum grounded in the Common Core State Standards (CCSS). Melanie R. Kuhn, PhD, is Associate Professor of Language and Literacy in the School of Education at Boston University. She began her career teaching in the Boston Public Schools and spent three years as a literacy coordinator at an international school in England. Dr. Kuhn is coauthor or coeditor of two previous books, Fluency in the Classroom and The Hows and Whys of Fluency Instruction.        

Lorell Levy, EdD, is a learning disabilities teacher/consultant with the West Windsor-Plainsboro School District in New Jersey and a part-time instructor at the Graduate School of Education, Rutgers, The State University of New Jersey. Formerly a special education teacher, Dr. Levy is a recipient of the New Jersey Governor's Teacher Recognition Award.
