Her engagement with them began in the early 1970s as inspirations for her teaching and writing, but she has returned to them periodically over the course of nearly three decades of scholarship as their transformation into "classical" figures prompted her to reevaluate their art. Roth teaches at Mills College, Oakland. Jonathan D. Katz, who chairs the Department of Gay and Lesbian Studies at City College of San Francisco, provides a commentary.
