The most fundamental process in human life is a person's continued encounters with others. It is in such encounters that he or she learns to understand himself or herself as well as to understand the world. The essential elements of such encounters can be best described as cognitive and emotional engagement with others. Philosophers, as varied in their orientations as George Herbert Mead, Charles Peirce, Martin Buber, Mikhail Bakhtin, and Ludwig Wittgenstein, have located human agents in interactional processes of one kind or another.
