Indonesia has a long and rich tradition of transgender cultures, with many festivals and local rites involving members of transgender communities. This book examines how transgendered individuals and transgendered communities are represented in Indonesian film, both gay, lesbian and wari (male-to-female transgender) film and more general film. It explores why transgendered characters are so often portrayed in Indonesian films and why such characters are popular with the Indonesian public. It contrasts the way transgendered lives are portrayed by film directors who are not themselves transgendered with how transgendered lives are actually lived, as revealed in the course of original interview research. It outlines how transgender representations in Indonesian film have developed over time, and compares transgender portrayals in Indonesian film with similar portrayals in the film of other countries of Southeast Asia, and with other media within Indonesia. The book concludes by discussing how, despite sympathetic portrayals of transgendered people in Indonesian film, popular attitudes remain ambivalent.
