General Education and the Development of Global Citizenship in Hong Kong, Taiwan and Mainland China: Not Merely Icing on the Cake

This anthology brings together a distinguished group of general education scholars and teachers from Hong Kong, Taiwan, and mainland China, including some of the renowned general education experts in the region, such as Professor Huang Chun Chieh from National Taiwan University and Professor Hu Xianzhang from Qinghua University in Beijing. With a comparative framework, the volume addresses three organizing questions of why, what and how. First, why has general education, a curricular movement started in the United States, taken center stage in today's undergraduate education in Hong Kong, Taiwan and mainland China? Secondly, what are the opportunities and challenges for general education across the region, in terms of program design, delivery and administration? Finally, how to execute an effective or successful general education program? The book provides a comparative framework for assessing the status and development of general education in the region, promoting the philosophy and sound pedagogy of general education, and preparing for the pending transition to the new 4-year program in Hong Kong. The 15 chapters in the collection are organized around four major themes of general education, including (1) Concepts and Objectives of General Education; (2) Curricular Designs for General Education; (3) Pedagogical Approaches to General Education; and, (4) Strategies for General Education Assessment.
