Why is globalisation not improving the lot of the millions of the world's poor? The number of poor people at the beginning of this new century is the same as in 1987 and poverty is rising in most developing countries. The deliberate aim of international organisations, such as the IMF, the World Bank, and the World Trade Organization (WTO), was to promote development through higher levels of international trade and investment, while the United Nations (UN) would promote well co-ordinated and coherent policies at the national and international levels. The link between globalisation and higher welfare is now in question and this book investigates the question of the future international agenda by looking at important UN debates, especially at its recent Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC) meetings.
