Greece in the European Union

Greece has long been construed as a problematical member of the European Union - a country that adopted "atypical" positions on various international issues of major European concern. Greece in the European Union describes Greece's evolution as a member state, identifying and analyzing the dynamics of its involvement in the EU policy process from the perspective of public policy. The contributors collected here discuss the patterns of continuity and change, success and failure observed in seven policy areas - environment, social regulation, regional policy, the single market, agriculture, EMU and foreign policy - in order to investigate how policy formulated and implemented in Greece has changed as a result of EU membership; why Greek authorities have managed to implement EU policy more successfully in some policy areas than in others and whether Greek public opinion vis-a-vis the EU changed over time. This book argues that although the widely-held belief that Greece is a laggard in anumber of policy areas is not inaccurate, the pattern of Greek membership of the EU is much more complex, not least because it contains success stories. It will be of interest to students and researchers of the European Union, public policy and Greek politics.
