In this second volume of Hayek: A Collaborative Biography archival material is juxtaposed with Hayek's published work to bring a new perspective to the life and times of one of the 20th century's most influential economists. This study examines Hayek's life from 1899 to 1933, covering his time in Austria, the influence of the 'Psychology School', his first trip to the USA, 1923–1924, his arrival at the London School of Economics and his early encounters with John Maynard Keynes. Meanwhile in the background lurked the Great Depression and the rise of Hitler.

For rhetorical purposes, Keynes challenged attacked Pigou and 'classical economics'; and Hayek challenged attacked Pigou while invoking the authority of 'classical liberalism'. Why did Hayek also defend the 'civilisation' of apartheid against the 'fashion' of 'human rights'? The archival evidence reveals that Hayek's 'Great Society of Free Men' was consistent with neo-feudalism: serfdom, slavery and domestic servitude.
