International Diplomacy and Colonial Retreat

The problems investigated in this collection had lasting consequences not only in the field of colonialism but in international politics as well. Decolonization and the Cold War, which brought about the most significant changes to global politics after 1945, are treated together. Using a comparative focus, this collection examines aspects of colonial break-down within the British, French, Dutch and Portugese empires after 1945, thus contrasting the political, social and military problems confronting the European imperial powers after World War II. Bringing together a number of British and overseas scholars, the collection is not confined to the realm of high politics and diplomacy. Certain essays explore the interplay between domestic and foreign policy, global strategy and economics, the role of the United Nations and the non-aligned movement, and the reaction of colonial nationalists to the process of imperial withdrawal.
