Knowing Shakespeare Senses, Embodiment and Cognition

A collection of essays on the ways the senses 'speak' on Shakespeare's stage. Drawing on historical phenomenology, science studies, gender studies and natural philosophy, the essays provide critical tools for understanding Shakespeare's investment in staging the senses.

LOWELL GALLAGHER is an Associate Professor in the Department of English at the University of California, Los Angeles, USA. He is the author of Medusa’s Gaze: Casuistry and Conscience in the Renaissance and a co-editor of Catholic Figures, Queer Narratives (Palgrave Macmillan 2006). He is currently completing a book on the biblical figure of Lot’s wife in early modern literary and visual cultures and modern philosophy.
 
SHANKAR RAMAN is an Associate Professor in the Literature Faculty at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), USA. He is the author of Framing ‘India’: The Colonial Imaginary in Early Modern Culture. He is currently working on a book on the connections between literature and mathematics in sixteenth and seventeenth century Europe.
