These pieces constitute the incidental music from Alphonse Daudet's play,L'Arlesienne(The Woman of Arles). For Suite No. 1, Bizet chose four sections from the original score of 27 episodes. Suite No. 2 features reorchestrations by Bizet's friend, Ernest Guiraud. Reprinted from authoritative Breitkopf & Hartel editions.

Best known as the composer of Carmen, Georges Bizet (1838–75) died from a heart attack a few months after the opera's premiere. In the course of his brief life, the musical prodigy and acclaimed pianist wrote a variety of orchestral works, keyboard pieces, and songs.
