InThe Landscape of Industry, Judith Alfrey and Catherine Clark combine the disciplines of archaeology and urban planning to establish a method for the analysis of complex industrial landscapes. Beginning with an examination of the Ironbridge Gorge, the authors consider a range of material evidence and combine an archaeological appraisal of the landscape with analysis of its characteristic settlement patterns and built forms. This approach helps to further define the shifting relationship between landscape and industry. The path of industrialization, because it is shaped and constrained by the landscape in which it occurs, cannot be studied without taking into consideration its surrounding environment.The Landscape of Industrynot only sets the agenda for a further study of the interaction between landscape and industry, but also takes a more activist approach, explaining how the integrated management of landscape resources can be successfully negotiated.
