Upon turning fifty, every woman crosses a threshold into the third phase of her lifeone that is generally uncelebrated by popular culture. In the face of a cultural myth of that women will fade away as they age, mature woman have the potential to transform the third phase of their lives into one of wholeness and personal integration. This Jungian perspective on the mature woman looks to Greek, Egyptian, and Asian mythology for powerful archetypes of women in the third stage of life. The mythic origins of goddesses such as Metis, Sophia, Hecate, and Hestia are explored in order to illustrate how their intellectual, mystical, spiritual, intuitive, or meditative attributes can help women to forge more meaningful lives.
