County Carlow gets its name from the town of Carlow and is bordered to the north by County Kildare, to the west by counties Laois and Kilkenny and to the east by counties Wexford and Wicklow. The River Barrow, the second largest in Ireland, runs along its western border with County Kilkenny. The Blackstairs Mountains contains Mount Leinster which, at nearly 800m in height, is the tallest mountain peak in the mountain range. The county is very rich in prehistoric monuments from the Neolithic Portal tombs to the late Iron Age Ogham stones.
