This story is about two mice who, as babies, are accidentally taken from their home in Staines and end up under the stairs in an old house far out in the country. An accident gives them unusual powers. One becomes very brainy and the other very strong. They decide to try and find their way back to Staines and their family. This journey is filled with many dangers for them both. But their new powers help them to overcome these dangers. They are able to give help to and get help from the other creatures that they meet along the way. Eventually a swan directs them to the Thames, (this flows alongside Staines) and later saves them from drowning when their plane crashes.
