Walter Dillard's luck deserted him the moment he was born in the rural farm town of Merrick, Texas, and didn't return till the day he died. Life and death, however, mean little in Merrick. Here, the past comes tomorrow, the future is recalled in wistful remembrances, and the present never ends. Merrick doesn't care if the face Walter wears isn't his own.
