People, Places, Checkmates teaches culture, history, geography, and citizenship in 16 chess-enhanced lesson plans. The plans complement upper elementary and middle school curricula in world history, U.S. history, geography, and social studies. Each lesson has the following sections: objectives, materials and sources, procedure, and evaluation and has been field-tested with classrooms of students in grades 4-8.Optional chess exercises follow each lesson plan in chapters 2-4. These exercises are perfect for pre-lesson warm ups or for students who finish the lesson plan more quickly than others. Chapter 5 provides chess basics such as algebraic notation and the rules of chess. Throughout the book, chess terms are highlighted when they are first used. Highlighted terms are also defined in the glossary.
