In The Place de la Bastille: the story of a quartier Keith Reader traces the history of the Bastille area of Eastern Paris (also known as the Faubourg Saint-Antoine), from its earliest days to the present. Erstwhile bastion of the skilled working-class and centre of radical agitation, epicentre of the Revolution of 1789, along with Pigalle and Montmartre a focus for popular and sometimes raffish night-life in the earlier part of the twentieth century, it is now an ethnically and socially mixed quartier which still bears the traces of its previous avatars. From the still comparatively new opera house (the largest and costliest in the world) to the March_ d'Aligre, one of Paris's most important Maghr_bi markets, this is among the city's most richly protean areas.
