Henry Timrod was a 19th century American poet, often called The Poet Laureate of the Confederacy. From 1848 to 1853 he submitted a number of poems to The Southern Literary Messenger, under the pen name Aglaus. He then decided to leave law and began tutoring and writing. When the Civil War began Timrod published many poems that inspired young men to enlist in the Confederate army. Timrod tried joining the army but quite soon illness sent home.
