Conspiracy theories hold an unending fascination. As early as the 17th century, stories were in circulation of the allegedly omnipotent Jesuit Order and its global activities. 18th century journalists observe the numerous secret societies and search for the hidden processes of human machinations. In the Age of Enlightenment, 'œunknown high-ups' are seemingly at work everywhere; 'œdisguised' and working with 'œinvisible venom' they direct bad fortune or plan the overthrow of the established order. The present study is the first to use broadly-based material to present a comprehensive reconstruction of the literary composition of conspiracy scenarios between 1750 and 1850.
