The Properties of Things: from The Poems of Bartholomew the Englishman continues David Solways explorations in the realm of fictive translation, this time that of the obscure thirteenth century scholar Bartolomaeus Anglicus. Solway has been called an internationalist of the imagination, and there is certainly much truth to this. More importantly, however, Solway remains one of the countrys most brilliant and inventive poets, his work rich in allusion, music and metaphor, a heady mix of heightened language and vernacular, cerebral, thought-provoking, visually stunning, and, as always, humourous and playful.
