The Regulation of Emotion

The main goal of this volume is to present, in an integrated framework, the newest, most contemporary perspectives on emotion regulation. The book includes empirically-grounded work and theories that are central to our understanding of the processes that constitute emotion regulation and their consequences. This volume has several secondary aims, as well. One is to highlight several newer subareas in the domain of emotion regulation that hold much promise, such as the relationship between psychopathology and emotion regulation. The book also presents data and theory that have applied value that may be useful for people working in such fields as communication, psychotherapy, and counseling. Finally, the volume gathers contributions across a variety of subfields and includes authors working not just in North America but in other areas of the world. To help achieve these goals, the volume has been organized to begin with the presentation of the most molecular aspects of emotion regulation and to end with the most molar ones. It comprises four parts, each integrating different lines of research from related domains. Part I is devoted to basic processes in emotion regulation, such as neurological, physiological or cognitive processes; part II examines the interplays between emotion regulation and individual regulation; part III presents work on individual differences and developmental processes in emotion regulation; and part IV examines the social functions and constraints of emotion regulation.

Pierre Philippot is Professor of Psychology at the University of Louvain at Louvain-la-Neuve and Research Associate of the Belgian National Science Foundation. His teaching and research domains cover emotion (with special interests for cognitive regulation of emotion and autobiographical memories, respiratory feedback in emotion, and emotional facial expression recognition) and psychotherapy, especially CBT and emotion-focused approaches. Philippot is past president of the Belgian French-Speaking CBT Association: Association pour l'Etude, la Modification et la Thérapie du Comportement. He founded and is presently directing a psychology clinical center specialized in the treatment of emotional disorders in the psychology department of his home university. Together with Robert S. Feldman, he has edited volumes, such as The Social Context of Nonverbal Behavior and Nonverbal Behavior in Clinical Settings.
Robert S. Feldman is Professor of Psychology at the University of Massachusetts at Amherst. A Fellow of the American Psychological Association and the American Psychological Society, his edited volumes include Fundamentals of Nonverbal Behavior; Applications of Nonverbal Behavioral Theories and Research, The Social Context of Nonverbal Behavior, and Regulation of Emotion. He received a B.A. from Wesleyan University and an M.S. and Ph.D. from the University of Wisconsin-Madison. He is a winner of a Fulbright Senior Research Scholar and Lecturer award and the University of Massachusetts College Distinguished Teacher award, and has written more than 100 books, book chapters, and scientific articles. His research interests encompass the development of nonverbal behavior in children, everyday deception, and the social psychology of education.
