Restorative Justice and Civil Society

Advocates of restorative justice question the state's ability to deliver satisfactory justice to the community, both in criminal and other cases. This collaborative volume looks at the burgeoning restorative justice movement and considers the relationship between restorative justice and civil society, examining debates and exploring ideas about who should 'control' restorative justice, the state or civil society. A diverse range of chapters, written by leaders in the field, engage with different aspects of restorative justice. Genuinely international, the book addresses aspects of civil society including schools, families, churches and private workplaces, the women's movement, victims of crime and indigenous groups. It also considers broader issues such as democracy, human rights, access and equity. David Bayley is Distinguished Professor in the School of Criminal Justice, State University of New York at Albany. He is a specialist in international criminal justice, with particular interest in strategies of policing, police reform and accountability John Braithwaite is Chair of the Regulatory Institutions Network and a Professor in the Law Program of the Research School of Social Sciences, Australian National University. He is working on integrating the theory of restorative justice and the theory of responsive regulation. Lisa Cameron works with Education Queensland in behaviour management and has a background in teaching and school counselling Chris Cunneen is the Director of the Institute of Criminology at the University of Sydney Law School. He has published widely in the areas of juvenile justice, policing, Indigenous issues and hate crime. Sinclair Dinnen is a Research Fellow in the Department of Political and Social Change, Research School of Pacific and Asian Studies, Australian National University. His current research focuses on conflict and conflict management in Melanesia Paul McCold is the Research Director for the International Institute for Restorative Practices in Bethlehem, Pennsylvania USA. He has taught criminal justice and is engaged in a number of restorative justice research activities. He has also published widely on restorative justice John McDonald is a Director of Transformative Justice Australia. He has worked as a teacher, policy officer and an adviser to the New South Wales Police Commissioner and the Australian National University David Moore is a Director of Transformative Justice Australia. He has worked as an academic, researcher and government adviser and has published on politics, justice and related fields Brenda Morrison is a postdoctoral fellow in the Centre for Restorative Justice, Research School of Social Sciences, Australian National University. Her theoretical work on the social psychological processes underlying restorative processes is currently being applied to the analysis of bullying and victimisation in schools Terry O'Connell is a former member of the New South Wales Police Service, where he had a significant role in the development of the Wagga Wagga model of restorative justice conferencing. He has worked closely with police and other agencies in Britain and North America in promoting this model. George Pavlich is a Professor of Sociology at the University of Alberta. He has written extensively on community justice, governance, critique and criminology Sir Charles Pollard is Chief Constable of Thames Valley Police. He has been at the forefront of discussions on reforms to the criminal justice system in England and Wales and has been instrumental in introducing restorative justice interventions for young offenders in Thames Valley. James Ritchie is a former consultant to the New South Wales Police Service, where he designed and implemented a comprehensive program of reform to improve crime reduction initiatives and boost officer morale. He has worked with police services in Britain, the United States, Japan and Scandinavia Clifford Shearing is a Professor of Criminology and Sociology at the University of Toronto and at the School of Government at the University of the Western Cape. He writes and researches on developments in regulation where he has explored shifts in the governance of security Lawrence Sherman is the Greenfield Professor of Human Relations in the Department of Sociology and Director of the Jerry Lee Center of Criminology at the University of Pennsylvania. Both his empirical and theoretical work focus on the consequences of social control systems, and especially sanctions, for levels of compliance and defiance Heather Strang is Director of the Centre for Restorative Justice, Research School of Social Sciences, Australian National University. She has directed the Reintegrative Shaming Experiments, examining the effectiveness of a restorative justice alternative to court Margaret Thorsborne is the Managing Director of Transformative Justice Australia (Queensland), a consultancy committed to increasing job satisfaction and productivity by improving workplace and community.
