Routes, Roads and Landscapes

An interdiscipinary team of leading scholars, including the cultural geographer Charles Withers, the historians David Nye and Thomas Zeller, the philosopher Gernot Böhme, the art historian Charlotte Klonk, landscape historians Christine Macy and Finola O'Kane, and architectural historians Alessandra Ponte and Vittoria di Palma, have come together in this volume to examine routes, landscapes, and the many ways in which they are entangled. The collection traces changing conceptions of the landscape from the Enlightenment to the present by looking at routes and roads: how movement has been facilitated, imagined and represented, and how such movement in turn has conditioned our understanding of the landscape. Drawing from rich and diverse historical materials, the essays engage with routes (roads and railways, paths and passages) that have made their way into and across the landscape, simultaneously constituting it qua landscape and making it accessible for practical and aesthetic exploitation, reification and interaction.At a time when ideas of routes and the study of landscape are central to so many disciplines, this multi-faceted collection focuses on the often over-looked overlaps between them.
