Youth Leadership in Sport and Physical

The emerging field of youth development has recently focused on ways of fostering leadership qualities in young people. Embracing the notion that children are capable of being leaders when given the chance, Martinek and Hellison describe actual programs that have been developed. These programs become the basis for a range of recommendations for planning, conducting, and evaluating leadership programs for urban youth, which are easily transferable to all young people in general. This book is useful for teachers, coaches, and youth agency program leaders, with ideas suitable for children in fourth grade through high school.

Tom Martinek is a Professor in the Department of Exercise and Sport Science at the University of North Carolina at Greensboro (UNCG). During his 32-year tenure, his research has focused on the social and psychological dynamics of teaching and coaching. He has spent the past fifteen years directing and teaching in youth development programs which have served over 500 underserved youth. He also provides pre- and in-service staff development programs for practitioners who work with at-risk, underserved children and youth. His honors have included WFMY-TV’s “For Those Who Care” Community Service Award, HUMARTS Award for Service and Research given by UNCG’s Department of Exercise and Sport Science; Salvation Army Boys and Girls Club Service Award; Dean Arthur Herbert Wilde Society Award at Boston University; Cagigal Lecturer Award, International Association of Physical Education in Higher Education; American Academy of Kinesiology and Physical Education inductee; Scholar Lecturer Award from Research on Teaching and Learning in Physical Education Special Interest Group of the American Education Research Association; International Who’s Who in Sport Pedagogy Theory and Research inductee; North Carolina University/College Teacher of the Year; UNCG Senior Scholar Award; and a Teaching Excellence Award from the Department of Defense. Dr. Martinek has authored and co-authored four book, numerous book chapters and articles in national and international journals. He has done consulting work in Indonesia, Greece, Portugal, Spain and Mexico. His efforts have focused on assisting professionals in establishing and sustaining after-school programs for underserved youth.

Don Hellison is a Professor in the College of Education at the University of Illinois at Chicago. He is also a Distinguished Research Fellow at Adelphi University. In addition, he has been Visiting Professor at eight universities. His honors include the International Olympic Committee President's Prize; American Alliance of Health, Physical Education, Recreation, and Dance (AAHPERD) Luther Halsey Gulick Medal, Presidential Citation; C.D. Henry Award for Service to Minorities; National Association of Sport & Physical Education Hall of Fame Award & Presidential Citation; Curriculum & Instruction Academy Scholar; the National Association of Physical Education in Higher Education Distinguished Scholar; University of Illinois at Chicago Excellence in Teaching Award; an honorary doctorate from Monmouth College; and the National Child Labor Committee Lewis Hine Award for Exceptional Service to Children and Youth. Hellison has authored six books, co-authored one book, and authored numerous chapters in books and journal articles. He has given keynote addresses, made presentations at professional meetings, and conducted workshops for teachers and youth workers in most of the fifty states and eight other countries. Much of Hellison's work focuses on the development, implementation and evaluation of alternative physical activity program models and structures that teach life skills and values, especially for underserved youth.
